SUVERETO

Driving along the Etruscan Coast you leave the sea and go inland at the Piombino/Venturina sign towards Suvereto. As you go through the town gates, you enter medieval times still present here with sold ancient walls circling the town.

A pentagonal wall punctuated by eight towers encloses Suvereto’s splendid historic center. The Rocca, the castle garrison in ancient times, stands on the hill dominating the town. The Palazzo Comunale, City Hall, dating back to 1200, is one of the most beautiful examples of civic architecture in Italy, and is a symbol of the town’s autonomy.

Concerts and historical commemorations are held in the impressive medieval setting of St. Francis’ Cloister (chiostro di S. Francesco) every year. St. Justus’ Church (Chiesa di S. Giusto), constructed around the year 1000 in Romanesque style with Byzantine decorations, stands between the walls, the parish church, and the gate to the town. Important sacred sculptures, paintings, and paraments are on display in the adjoining Museum of Sacred Art.

Be sure to visit the Church of Our Lady Above the Door (Chiesa della Madonna di Sopra la Porta), in the town center, and Holy Cross Church (Chiesa del Santissimo Crocifisso).

The ancient public fountains, such as the Fountain of the Angels (Fontana degli Angeli) and the Belvedere are notably interesting from an architectural point of view and were once used for domestic purposes.

The wine route

An important stretch of the Costa degli Etruschi Wine Route – the Suvereto sub region of the Val di Cornia DOC region - winds its way through countryside rich with agricultural traditions, among cork, oak and ilex woods and Mediterranean scrub.

Ever-better known and appreciated wines are made here by blending the traditional grapes of this region, such as Sangiovese, with Cabernet and Merlot to create a fusion of tradition and innovation.

Suvereto is an important stop on the circuit of oil and wine producing towns and is noted for its oil mills. It has also aways been the land of wine and hence "la Strada del vino" (wine route)- an itinerary for your senses and soul.
Visits to the cellars and oil mills for wine, oil, and local product tasting render this gastronomic itinerary unforgettable.

Montioni nature park

The park appears as an island of green hills extending over 5,000 hectares at the center of a vast area covered by Mediterranean scrub, ilex and Turkey oak woods, and contains important archaeological finds.

Montioni Nature Park is a fascinating natural heritage inhabited by numerous species of birds and other fauna including boar, roe and fallow deer, and porcupine.

Silence reigns here, and numerous trails wait to be explored on foot, by bicycle or on horseback in this splendid green setting of Mediterranean scrub and woods thick with oak.

Old traditions and crafts

Suvereto’s old traditions live on in ancient crafts passed down from generation to generation. Country trades and handicrafts are reminders of centuries of hard work and dedication.

Charcoal burners, cork workers, carpenters, blacksmiths, straw weavers and bakers, the rich tradition of crafts continues today, particularly with wrought iron work and wood.

Wrought iron and other local handicrafts can be found in the welcoming shops of the old town.

Festivals and other events

The wealth of historical and cultural traditions belonging to this ancient village come to life in fascinating events held all year round. The Suvereto Festival is held in the first ten days of December and features gastronomic, artistic, and folklore events.

Legendary wild boar dishes cooked to recipes handed down through time can be sampled together with exhibitions, meetings, historical re-enactments such as the signing of the Charta Libertatis, a parade in 13th century costume, and an archery tournament.

Suvereto Summer charms with concerts, plays, and fests that take place in the magical setting of the cloisters, paved streets and splendid buildings of the historic center. One of the most looked forward to events, "Serate medievali", is held in July.

The whole town turns out in costume and various events are held: weddings celebrated according to medieval rites, duals between flag-wavers, noble archery tourneys, musical and singing reviews, painting exhibitions, and local product markets.  An array of restaurants for all pockets await you in and around Suvereto.

Daytrips from Suvereto

Baratti Bay - a rocky promontory with wonderful beaches. Five minutes from there don't miss the fortress town of Populonia with its nearby unique Etruscan Necropolis built on the shore. Etruscan finds are carefully preserved inside the Archaeological Park of baratti ad Populonia, in the museums of Piombino, Rosignano and Cecina. 

The beaches of fine white sand o San Vincezo,Vada alternate with the coarser and darker beaches of Cecina, Bibbona and Castagneto.

The medieval villages of Campiglia, Bolgheri, Castagneto Carducci, Bibbona and Sassetta reveal fairy-tale like iteneraries.

From Piombino (25 mins) take the ferry to the wonderful island of Elba where you can visit Napoleon's villa.

Florence, Siena are about one and a half hour's drive.

The Venturina Springs dating back to the Etruscans offer spas that rise around a small lake with natural water at 36degrees.
